5 Tips For Choosing Your Perfect Dining Table

Posted by Joe Dueck on 8/9/2011 to Tips

If the kitchen is the heart of a home than the dining room celebrates hearty welcome to those you love. A beautiful solid wood dining room table and comfy chairs can upgrade your room up to a new level of style and create that relaxing and cozy dining atmosphere for those who visit and reside in your house.

Having been a craftsman for 12 years, I certainly give my preference to real solid wood furniture against MDF or veneers, especially when it concerns such heavy used items as dining tables and chairs. A solid wood dining table will serve you through the bumps and knocks of a busy family life and can easily become your family heirloom years later.

So, the table should be durable, thus, in my opinion, solid wood and well-built. But it also should fit your space and home decor style. Selecting an ideal table can be easy if you know a few secrets.

Consider the size of your dining room. A good rule of thumb is to allow 36” or more between the edge of the table and the nearest wall for easier circulation around the table. It’s always good to have enough space for chairs to pull out and people to walk behind them without having to squeeze between walls.

The shape of your dining area matters. Square and round tables make dining more intimate. They sit people snugly and are space-savers in a small dining room.

When it comes to planning a larger gathering, rectangular and oval tables are an ideal solution. The tables with such top shapes sit small and big numbers equally comfortably. They are great for casual dining but look formal enough to entertain more official guests.

Choose the right finish colour. For example, all the tables at KVADRO are customizable. It means that you can select the table color that will suit your dining room ideally. Keep your floor color in mind when choosing the finish. It’s not necessary to match the floor to the table but it’s nice to make them complement each other.

Take into consideration your sitting habits. Allow 26” width per person for the best service and comfort. If you like to stretch your legs out when sitting than you surely need a table that has an open leg structure.

How many people you plan to sit? If you plan to have a big group of guests and family over for dinner you might want to consider adding a few leaves to your table. Leaves can be stored inside of your table or in a cabinet. It’s always better to store leaves close to your table, in the same environment, due to the changing nature of the wood.
